PHILIPPE_HERBET_INVITATION

In 2010, I started a new clump of rhizomatous shoots in the explosive region of the Caucasus, against a background of the high
geo-strategic stakes linked to oil, the struggle between the USA, Europe and Russia for political influence, and the vague desires
for identity that had resulted from the Islamisation of the region. I used a Romanticist method, inspired by the Russian writer Lermontov.
Thus the rhizome grew away from me, leading me to discover the Other, the world and contemporary problems, while putting them all
into perspective. This work is in progress.

Artist residence at the FAAP in Sao Paulo, Brasil is accepted

The project is a poetic inventory of Brazil and of Sao Paulo at the start of the twenty-first century, based on a humanistic approach, without dwelling on the sordid side of life or pathos, that I wanted to create to be seen and read. This “Vagabundagem”  would, of course, have a social dimension, because I wanted to make portraits of the Brazilians I had met on my travels, to gather their testimonies and to transcribe them in an edited form and to study the relationship between these people and their environment and landscape. The subjects of my photographs are real “actors” and form an integral part of the project. Transversality, links and building links are important to me, and I don’t get attached to a particular social class or category of people: rather I include everyone I meet during my comings and goings in Brazil. The rhizome links the places together in a humanistic way.

By retaining the tradition of writing and photography - intimate, carefully chosen and stripped down to its essentials - in the exhibition and book, I would like to make sense of this vagabond wandering, this rhizome, by creating an application for tablets/iPads and smartphones/iPhones. This interactive application would include photographs, texts, maps and videos, all linked to each other. Users can thus get close to experiencing my own vagabond and nomadic wanderings. One option would allow them to create their own rhizomes, based on this material. A website would also be set up for this project and at the private view of the exhibition, participants could download the application at a special WiFi hotspot. I can happily imagine working with students at the FAAP to create this application. It will be an echo of the art books that I wrote for each of my journeys, of course, but such “artist’s applications” are a new form which will develop in the future, because they are much more accessible to all than rare art books, and, in this particular case, it will be a metaphor for my Brazilian experience.

Zeitgenössische russische Fotografie und Videokunst

Eröffnung: 12. Januar 2007, 19 Uhr Ausstellungsdauer: 13. Januar - 3.
